True to its name and the rock ‘n roll spirit of its maker Vincent Marie, this is Batard—a literal bastard of 60% Normandy apple cider and 40% hand-harvested Chenin Blanc from the volcanic soils of Auvergne. This explosive bottle doesn’t pull any punches, with ripe, fruity apple notes taking the lead with plenty of spice and bright acidity to back it up. Dangerously drinkable, at only 9% ABV!

Grape Variety: Chenin Blanc, Apple Cider

Region: Auvergne, France

Tastes like: Green apples, candied lemons, seashells, cinnamon

Best with:  Breton galettes, apple pie, Chevre cheese

Size: 750 ml

Alc Content: 9%

SAS No Control

A natural wine lover since 2003, punk rocker Vincent Marie went from enthusiast to vigneron 10 years later when he started SAS No Control, where he farms organically on the ancient soils of Auvergne. No chemicals are added at any stage of the winemaking process, and length of ageing is never decided beforehand: he lets the wine evolve and run free, creating living wines with aromas that practically jump from the glass!

Behind the Bottle

Located in Auvergne, SAS No Control spans five hectares of vines over ancient volcanic soils that nourish Gamay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Sylvaner, and Pinot Auxerrois—all of which vigneron Vincent Marie farms organically before vinifying naturally into 5-7 cuvees every year with no additives and no filtration. Red grapes are put into whole bunches for maceration, while whites are pressed carefully and slowly—both are aged on the lees, with their evolution being the ultimate decider of length of time to express terroir best.
