Costador
Metamorphika Sumoll 2018
Not for the faint of heart, this big red is bold, tannic, and very much tastes alive. All the Sumol Negra grapes come from a single mountain in Catalonia, and are fermented and aged in clay amphorae which are buried in underground caves and bottled in glazed clay for good measure. This wine is from ancestral native grapes and made the ancient way— just like Jesus drank it. Benefits from long aeration.

Behind the Bottle
Joan uses spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and low intervention principles in the cellar. Aging of obscure, ancient, native grape varieties like Sumoll Negra, Trepat, Macabeo, and Xarel-lo occur in stainless steel, french oak barrels, and notably, clay amphora.
With 60 to 110 year old vines, altitudes of 400 to 800 meters, and clay, slate, and limestone soils, Franquet now crafts genuine, authentic natural wines that are unique expressions of their terroir.
